Germany Accuses Russia of Failed Drone Attack at Major Airport, Announces Diplomatic Retaliation
German officials have attributed an August 4 drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, involving an explosive device near Ukrainian cargo planes, to Moscow, prompting the closure of Russian diplomatic facilities.

Germany has formally accused Russia of orchestrating a failed drone sabotage operation at Leipzig/Halle Airport, announcing on Tuesday the closure of Russian diplomatic facilities. This move escalates tensions following investigators' findings that linked Moscow to the August incident.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Russia's consulate in Bonn would be shut down, and the lease for the Russian House cultural center in Berlin would be terminated. These actions come after German authorities concluded that Russia was behind the August 4 event.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt indicated that forensic evidence and intelligence reports connected Russia to the attack. During the incident, a drone carrying an explosive device was discovered next to a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
Officials confirmed that the explosive failed to detonate due to a faulty detonator.
German authorities also believe a second drone collided with another nearby cargo aircraft. Officials have connected this event to what Minister Dobrindt characterized as Russia's "well-established pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe."
Russia has consistently denied any involvement in the allegations.
The Russian Embassy in Berlin labeled the accusation "absurd." Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow would implement a "mirror-image" response to Germany's actions. The embassy later described Berlin's measures as an "unprecedented escalation in Russian-German relations."
Beyond shutting down Russian diplomatic sites, Minister Wadephul announced stricter entry criteria for Russian citizens and additional measures targeting Russia's so-called shadow fleet. He also confirmed that Russia's ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechayev, had been summoned.
This announcement marks the first time Germany has publicly attributed responsibility for the airport attack. Previously, Berlin had only indicated that "foreign powers" might have been involved, although American media had earlier reported U.S. officials suspected Russia.
Strategic Importance of Leipzig/Halle Airport
Leipzig/Halle Airport functions as one of Europe's largest cargo hubs and serves as a vital logistics center for both Germany's military and its NATO allies. It also hosts Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft, making it a strategically crucial location supporting Ukraine's ongoing cargo operations.
International Reactions and Broader Threats
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte voiced his support for Germany's conclusions, stating on social media that the alliance "stands in full solidarity with Germany."
The evidence is clear. And I welcome the measures announced by Germany in response,
Rutte wrote.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union was preparing further sanctions against Russia. Concurrently, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Moscow of exacerbating tensions across the region.
These developments occur as Germany has increasingly warned about a growing campaign of hybrid threats targeting its military, transportation networks, and critical infrastructure. Last week, Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that those responsible for hostile actions against Germany would "pay a price."
Separately on Tuesday, German police confirmed they were investigating improvised explosive and incendiary devices found at a power substation in the eastern state of Brandenburg. A damaged power line at the site had caused a temporary power outage, though authorities have not yet identified who placed the devices.
