Ritsuko Nakayama, a celebrated figure in Japanese bowling whose remarkable career helped ignite the sport's widespread popularity during the 1970s, passed away on Saturday at the age of 84.
The Japan Professional Bowling Association (JPBA) confirmed Nakayama's passing, noting that she had been undergoing medical treatment for an undisclosed health condition. Her death signifies the departure of a truly influential personality from the annals of Japanese bowling history.
Before her distinguished career in bowling, Nakayama was a competitive volleyball player, participating on a corporate team. She transitioned to bowling following the dissolution of her volleyball squad.
A Pioneering Career in Bowling
In 1969, Nakayama successfully completed the inaugural professional qualification examination for women bowlers, securing the second position behind the late Kayoko Suda. She was among the pioneering group of 13 women who became professional bowlers that year.
Just one year later, in 1970, Nakayama cemented her place in history by achieving the first perfect game ever recorded in women's professional bowling. Her influence and widespread appeal, however, transcended her achievements on the bowling lanes.
By 1971, her fame led to an appearance in a television commercial for a shampoo brand. The memorable catchphrase from this advertisement subsequently inspired her popular nickname, "Sawayaka Ritsuko-san," by which she was affectionately recognized across the nation.
