The 2026 World Series matchup is now finalized. The Tampa Bay Rays have secured their place in the Fall Classic, clinching the American League pennant by defeating the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 6 of the ALCS. They are now set to face the Milwaukee Brewers, who previously swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in a surprising National League Championship Series.
Rays Capitalize on Home Advantage
The Rays entered Game 6 with significant momentum, having won a crucial Game 5 on the road when the series was tied at two games apiece. Returning to a sold-out Tropicana Field for their first home game since that pivotal victory, Tampa Bay leveraged the energy of their home crowd to seal the pennant.
Tampa Bay initiated the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Richie Palacios delivered a timely two-out double, putting the Rays ahead 2-0. Later, with the score at 3-1 in favor of the Rays, star player Junior Caminero hit what appeared to be a series-clinching home run. Caminero connected with an inside pitch, watching intently as the ball struck the foul pole. The stadium erupted in celebration, with Caminero himself expressing visible elation before reaching first base, understanding the significance of the 5-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Caminero took his time rounding the bases, savoring the moment, as the Rays faithful mirrored his excitement throughout the ballpark.
Cleveland, however, demonstrated resilience, narrowing the deficit in the subsequent inning by scoring two runs, making it a 5-3 contest. Yet, consistent with their performance throughout the season, the Rays delivered a timely response. Yandy Diaz launched his own home run, a towering 416-foot blast over the left field wall, re-establishing a four-run advantage for his team.
Securing the Pennant
As the top of the ninth inning commenced, Bryan Baker, the Rays’ reliable closer, took to the mound to finalize the Game 6 victory. He efficiently retired Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez with groundouts to first base, before Chase DeLauter popped out foul, officially securing Tampa Bay’s entry into the World Series.
This marks the first World Series appearance for the Tampa Bay Rays since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. For the Milwaukee Brewers, it represents their first trip to the Fall Classic in 44 years. Significantly, regardless of the outcome, one of these franchises will make history by winning its inaugural World Series championship, as neither team has ever hoisted the Commissioner's Trophy.
