United States government personnel operating in the Mexican border city of Nogales, Sonora, are now subject to new travel limitations, according to recent announcements from U.S. officials.
Security Alert Issued for Border City
On Saturday, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico released an advisory restricting official government activities and movements in Nogales, Sonora. This measure was implemented in response to unspecified threat information concerning the area.
"Due to threat information, U.S. government activities in, and travel to, Nogales have been restricted to essential movement during daylight hours only," stated the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales. "We are alerting U.S. citizens of this threat and change in posture."
Following the issuance of this alert, Sonora's State Security Board confirmed it had communicated with U.S. consular officials. However, the state authorities indicated they had not received information detailing a specific threat that would establish a concrete risk to the public. Despite this, they affirmed their commitment to continuing preventive security operations within Nogales.
Broader Travel Advisory and Safety Recommendations
The advisory also served as a reminder that the U.S. Travel Advisory classifies the entire state of Sonora as a Level 3 destination, recommending that travelers "Reconsider Travel" to the region due to potential risks.
For any U.S. citizens currently in or planning to visit the area, officials urged heightened vigilance and awareness of their surroundings. Key safety recommendations included seeking immediate shelter if an incident occurs, informing friends and family of their well-being in such events, adhering to instructions provided by Mexican law enforcement, and monitoring local news sources for ongoing updates.
U.S. lawmakers also emphasized the importance of observing the warnings issued by the U.S. government. Representative Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) conveyed his concerns via social media, stating:
"For Americans in or near Nogales - or who may have family members or friends there: please heed the guidance and warnings from the U.S. government. We are praying for the safety of U.S. citizens and personnel who may be in harm's way."
The precise nature of the threat in Nogales that prompted this security warning has not yet been publicly disclosed.
